Heading to Costa Rica for pickleball? Between the tropical climate and the travel, a little planning goes a long way. Here's a Costa Rica pickleball packing list and a few trip tips so you arrive ready to play.
On-court essentials
- Your paddle (and a backup if you have one — replacements are hard to find locally)
- Extra balls — outdoor balls; bring more than you think you'll need
- Court shoes with good lateral support (not running shoes)
- Moisture-wicking clothing — it's warm and humid; quick-dry fabrics are your friend
- Hat, sunglasses, and a sweat towel
Sun & climate
- Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50) — the tropical sun is strong, even on cloudy days
- Electrolyte packets — you'll sweat more than you're used to
- Insect repellent for evenings
- A light rain layer if you're visiting in green season (mornings are usually clear)
Play early or late
The best pickleball happens in the morning and late afternoon, when it's cooler. Midday is for the pool. At Bella Vista the 4 courts are lit, so evening play under the lights is a great option too.
Getting there
Most players fly into San José (SJO), about 1h20 from Bella Vista — here's what to expect at the airport. Arrange group transport in advance so your whole crew arrives together and ready to play.
Where to stay and play
The easiest pickleball trip is one where the courts are steps from your bed. See our Costa Rica pickleball resort page, read about what a pickleball camp here looks like, or learn how to plan a pickleball retreat. Pack smart and come play — pura vida.
